Two European stratospheric research balloons flew student-built experiments during the Oct. 9–19 BEXUS campaign at Esrange in Sweden. ESA reported that 79 university students took part and described the work of six teams supported by ESA and the Swedish National Space Agency, plus five supported by Germany's DLR. BEXUS 39 rose to 26.8 kilometers on Oct. 14 and carried five experiments; BEXUS 38 reached 33.4 kilometers on Oct. 17 with six experiments. Projects ranged from a self-healing coating test to methane infrared detection and radiation measurement. The campaign gives students a chance to carry research through design, review, launch and recovery. It is a practical training program, not a claim that every experiment is already a finished product.
